Freelance Artists

Artist Guidelines

Recycled Paper Greeting cards are all created by freelance artists - one of them could be you! Every year, RPG adds 3,000 new cards to its product line. Do you have a clever greeting card concept or a new and interesting style of greeting card that you believe would stand out among the rest? If so, then we want to hear from you!

While most greeting card companies simply give assignments, we like doing things a little different at RPG. We believe that the strongest cards come from individuals expressing their feelings in their own styles; which is why we strongly recommend that you send messages with your artwork. Experience has shown us that the art makes the customer pick up a card, but it is the message that makes them buy it.

We currently don't accept submissions electronically. One reason is that with the number of people involved in the review process at RPG, we have found that everything moves along a lot quicker if we already have a hard copy version of the submission. More importantly, however, we want to get the best representation of what the finished product will look like, which is why we request that submissions look as much like greeting cards as possible. The standard format for a greeting card is 5" x 7". Artwork and any corresponding words should be on the front of the card with the message appearing on the inside. It is also important to note that because we believe strongly that the artwork and the message go hand in hand, we also do not accept submissions that include a message without any accompanying artwork.

Sound interesting to you? If the answer is "yes" then the following pointers will help get your artwork ready for submission to RPG:

  • Please send ideas for specific occasions, such as Birthday, Friendship, Thank You, Miss You, and Thinking of You. Because we work so far in advance of any holiday, we recommend that you do not send holiday-specific cards initially.

  • We love variety, so feel free to send up to ten card ideas. Be sure to label each card idea with your name, address, and phone number.

  • When submitting your ideas to RPG, we recommend that you send color copies or photographs of the artwork. Do not send slides, disks, tearsheets, or original artwork. Please note that Recycled Paper Greetings is not responsible for any damages to submitted artwork.

  • Remember, send in your idea assembled to look as much like a real greeting card as possible.

  • Lastly, originality is paramount at RPG, so please do not send previously published cards.

Submissions can be sent to the attention of:
The Art Department
Recycled Paper Greetings
111 N Canal St, Suite 700
Chicago, IL 60606-7206

The review process can take up to two months. Simultaneous submissions to other companies are acceptable. If your work is chosen, we will contact you to discuss final art preparation, procedures, and payment. If your work is not selected, it will be returned to you. To facilitate the return process, please be sure to included a self-addressed stamped envelope that is big enough to hold your submission.

Creativity reigns at RPG and we want you to be a part of the process. Send your ideas to RPG and you could become a part of our super-talented team of freelance artists.
